Learn my top 5 tips for length retention for natural hair. This is the KEY to fast natural hair growth. Use these tips to prevent breakage and see your true length.

Hey guys, it's Joi here, and welcome to my channel. Today we are talking about my top tips for length retention and growing out your natural hair. We will be discussing what things you might need to change in your hair routine and lifestyle to help you retain length. Because many people with black hair, African American hair, kinky hair, curly hair think that their hair cannot grow or that their hair grows a lot slower than other people. And sometimes that's not just the case. Your hair is growing consistently.

However, things like your environment and what you're doing to your hair can break your hair's ends. Curly hair is much more fragile. Therefore it is much more prone to breakage. And that's when it seems like your hair is at a standstill with the growth. Because the rate of breakage is faster than your rate of growth, so let's get into some of the tips to prevent breakage and retain all of your length this year.

If you're new to my channel, make sure you hit that subscribe button and turn on the notification bells. And while you guys are at home, I'm making daily videos. So go down to the comments, and I have a list of all the videos I've been doing. So go catch up if you have not been watching. Also, just as a thank you for being a part of my channel, I have a free hair growth guide. It's going to tell you the top seven mistakes that might be preventing your hair growth. That is additional tips that can help you with your hair growth journey.

Tip #1

My first tip for length retention is thinking about how you detangle your hair and making sure that it is in a way that is going to help you prevent breakage. So there are a few main aspects of detangling to consider. The first thing is the tools. So what types of tools are using on your hair? My routine includes detangling and then using my honeycomb detangling brush from Joiful Bee to get the tangles out of my hair and define my curls. However, some of you guys are still using thin combs to detangle your hair. And that's not good because this is going to rip out your hair and cause extra breakage. You should use wide-tooth combs, your fingers, or proper detangling brushes for curly hair.

Tip #2

Secondly is your method. So what types of methods are you using to detangle your hair? Are you going rough on your hair? Are you starting from the roots and then going to the ends? The proper way to detangle your hair is gently, preferably in a wet state with conditioner. Then start from your ends, making your way up to your roots slowly and gently. Ensure that you're not going too hard on your hair because that could cause unnecessary breakage and hair being ripped out for no reason.

The last thing to consider when it comes to detangling is the frequency. Do not detangle your hair every night, even every other night, because that will cause extra manipulation to your hair. And that's not good if you're trying to grow out your hair and have tight curly hair types. I only pull out my detangling brush on wash day, which is every two weeks for me. If I'm going to do a different style, I try not to manipulate it too much. If I do have to detangle, I will finger detangle. But usually, the way my hair works is I don't have to read detangle it until wash day. If that's not feasible for you, try to limit the amount you're detangling because you will see a significant amount of protection being held to your hair because it's not continually being brushed through.

So the second thing you should consider when thinking about how you can retain your length is your regular trims. Make sure that you're getting your hair trimmed regularly and making sure all the split ends and single strand knots are cut off. Do not want to hang on to split ends, heat damage ends, or perm ends. Let them go!

Tip #3

So my third tip for length retention on natural hair is protective styling. It's is a great way to retain length if it's done correctly. For example, if you get super small braids and break off your edges or get a protective style and not care for your hair and keep it moisturized, that is not retaining length. When you get braids, you can check out my video on how I maintain my hair and braids. Protective styles will help you stop manipulating your hair as frequently, so going back to my tip about detangling, how you're not supposed to do as frequently. Protective styling helps you with that because there's no way you're going to brush through your hair with braids, twists, etc. in your hair.

Tip #4

So my fourth tip is a lifestyle tip, and that is when you're sleeping, making sure that you're either sleeping with a silk pillowcase or a silk scarf around your head. That is because when you're sleeping, you don't want that extra friction from the cotton, causing extra split ends or dryness to your hair. Be sure that you're protecting your hair while you're asleep.

Tip #5

And my fifth tip is about protecting your hair during wash day. So my quick tip is if you're still using a cotton bastille to dry your hair, it's time to switch over to a microfiber towel or a T-shirt. That is because the fibers on a regular cotton towel are way too big and rough and will snag your curly hair, which is not what we want when we're trying to retain our length. So go for a microfiber towel or a T-shirt with much smaller fibers that will hug your curls instead of ripping them out.

Conclusion
