Hey guys, it's Joi here! Today I'm going to be telling you my top tips for heat-damaged hair, how to care for your hair when it has heat damage, and how to get rid of that heat damage, recovering from your heat damage.

So if you're not familiar with heat damage, it's the damage that occurs to your hair after using key tools like straighteners, blow dryers, hot combs, etc. And it usually comes in the form of the loosening of your curls. A more extreme version of heat damage is when your hair is straight and limp. Heat damage is not suitable for your hair because it can cause split ends, which is dead hair. I experienced heat damage early on in my hair journey. I had no idea what was going on. I forgot what my natural hair texture was. Eventually, I use the tips that I use in this video to get my hair back healthy and curly.

So let's start with my first tip. And a lot of you guys do not want to hear this, but that is doing a big chop. Cutting off your straight ends is the best way in the most efficient way. Your curls are going to be back and pop in immediately. Aren't you sick of having to put like perm rods on the ends of your twist out to make it curl? The big chop is the quickest and most painful way because not everyone wants to give up their length. So if you are going to say no to the quick way, let's get into some other ways that you can get your hair back to health.

It would help if you established a routine that will help nurse your new growth and keep it healthy. So the first step does include scissors, but it's not cutting everything off. It's just participating in monthly trims. Cut about a half-inch to an inch off every single month. For me, every month, I cut off an inch of my hair. It helped me bounce out the new growth while also getting rid of those damaged ends.

So the second part of this routine is deep conditioning your hair. You want to make sure that your hair is staying moisturized. When you have damaged hair, your hair will get dry a lot faster, and your styles will not last long. So I recommend deep conditioning once a week because that will help give your hair the moisture that it needs. If you don't wash your hair once a week, consider co-washing and deconditioning once a week and then pulling out the shampoo when you do your whole wash day routine.

You want to make sure that you are properly moisturizing your hair with water sealing and with oil. It would help if you used hair butters and curling creams to help bring your hair moisture every day. There are also split in balms that can help bring extra moisture to your ends, but they do not cure your split ends. They help your hair go a little bit longer without the split, and it's getting worse. I know Shea Moisture has a split in a balm that I've seen a lot of people rave about.

My final tip is going to protective styles. Cut off a fair amount of your heat damaged hair and then go straight into a protective style like braids, twists, etc. You're going to keep that in for a couple of weeks. So try to cut off as much as you're comfortable with before going into that protective style. And then once you take it out, you'll see some growth and then cut it again and go to your next protective style.

So these are my four tips on how you can get on the road to recovery. There's no way to cure your heat damaged hair other than cutting it off. If your hair is starting to bounce back, consider doing some protein treatments and see if your pearls are coming back. But, if your hair is straight, it's time to cut it off, sis.
