Unpopular Opinions: Natural Hair Edition
This is my unpopular opinion video natural hair addition. I saw this topic trending on Twitter, and I have a few unpopular opinions I wanted to share about natural hair products and preconceptions. So if you're excited about this video, make sure you subscribe to this channel, and you have notification bells turned on. We are almost at 100k. If you aren't subscribed, subscribe now, sis, and leave video requests for the road to 100k because I will be posting a lot. I have a vlog channel where I'm posting my study abroad and travel journey. If you're interested in those videos, I have that link below as well.
Unpopular opinion number one: a wash n' go is a wash n' no for me as far as being a type 4c sister. What I mean by this is that there is no way someone with kinky hair will go in the shower, brush with conditioner through their hair, hop out the shower, let it dry for two hours, and it's going to be looking luscious. The process takes much longer. There's a wash, condition, decondition, detangle, then get out the shower, add some styling products, twisting, letting it dry for like a day, and then taking the twist out maybe a day later and hoping it comes out the right way.
The second unpopular opinion. I do not use gels on my hair. I do not know what the purpose of it is. Maybe I'm not just on the bandwagon yet. I don't hate them, and I'm just saying that my hair does some wild stuff whenever I use them. That might be a texture thing, or I don't know how to use them. Speaking of gels, another unpopular opinion is that I've never used Eco Styler gel (the natural hair holy grail). I know there was some controversy around Eco Styler specifically, but I've never used it. So I guess that makes me unpopular.
My next unpopular opinion is that kinky hair needs less manipulation. As you guys know, when I grew my hair from shoulder length to waist length, it was the time when I was doing the least amount of manipulation in my hair routines. I was washing my hair every six weeks and only finger detangling. Also, I didn't do that many protective styles. I kept the same routine every day. And I only used shea butter as a styling product. My hair grew so long. Once I got out of that routine and started using brushes and washing my hair more frequently, my hair was not growing at the same speed as it did with little manipulation.
My next unpopular opinion: you do not need a huge archive of products like your favorite beauty influencers. The only reason we natural hair influencers have so many products is that we get them for free. I went to the store, and natural hair products are crazy priced for no reason. There's no reason for you to go out and buy an entire line. I'd say you need the essentials. If you want to know the essentials, you can watch my old videos or go to my Amazon shop. But I say water, some oil or cream, and your shampoo and conditioner is a great start.
The next unpopular opinion: long hair does not equal healthy hair. A lot of you guys might be saying in the comments, "Oh, your natural hair looks shorter." It's not that much shorter. I'm just embracing the shrinkage right now. But longer hair does not equal healthier hair. That's why I cut 3 inches off of my hair at the beginning of the year. I'm more concerned about the health and how the curls look. Are the curls defined? Are they coming out? Those traits are more important than length.
My next unpopular opinion: if you have heat damage or perm damage, cut it all off. I have so many pictures of me just looking crazy out here because my twist-outs didn't work. I had straight ends, and my hair was looking like the struggle bus. I know you're like, "Oh, I want to keep my length, I got this far like, and I don't want to start all over." But, when you look back at those pictures, best believe you're going to be like, "what was I doing?" So just cut it all off.
My last popular opinion says stop following the YouTube tutorials of people who don't have your hair type. If somebody has 3a big curls, their hair will differ if your hair looks like mine. No, that doesn't mean you can't watch their videos and support. I'm saying stop expecting your hair to come out the same and upset when it doesn't. I went through this when I first went natural, and I watched all these loose curl hair girls because back in the day, that's all that was on YouTube. And I'd be like, "mom, my hair going to come out like them." It did come out beautiful. It just didn't come out the same. What I'm saying is, don't have false expectations about your hair type. And that goes either way. Don't expect to get a nice coily tight, beautiful fro if your hair is loose and wavy. It goes both ways. Embrace your curls and your beauty. Find out what works for your hair type. And that comes with following tutorials for people who have similar textures to have the right expectations on how your hair will turn out.
So that is all I have to say about my unpopular opinions about natural hair. Let me know if you agree with any of these or if you have any unpopular opinions of your own. Also, don't forget to subscribe to my vlog channel. I'm trying to get that to 100k subscribers. Thanks for watching. Peace out.
