How to Grow Your Natural Hair Long and Healthy
Hey guys, it's Joi here, and today I'm going to be telling you how to grow your natural hair long and healthy. I'm going to be also taking down my braids for my braid out while I'm talking to you. I'm going to be giving you advice while doing my hair. So, I'm starting with some oil on my hands to make everything smooth. My scarf fell off last night, so there's a little bit of frizz.

My first tip is to get a consistent hair wash day routine. So if you guys aren't familiar, I am the founder of Joiful Bee, a haircare brand with hair tools, and our signature product is the perfect wash day kit. I'm just going to show you a quick clip of my five-step wash day routine so you can get some inspiration on how to make every wash day have a perfect wash day. And I'm also just going to tell you the benefits of each item. It would be best if you incorporated them into your wash day to help you grow long and healthy hair.
I always think of a great wash day starts with the scalp. So making sure you cleanse your scalp thoroughly. It would be best if you tried a hot oil treatment, which is when you apply warm oils to your hair before washing. Ensure there's no dandruff, dryness, or flakiness in your scalp when caring for your hair. Also, you want to make sure that you're deep conditioning your hair on your wash day. I condition every wash today just because I wash my hair about every two weeks.
Next is properly detangling your hair. You do not want to cause breakage to your hair when you are doing your wash day. You want to make sure that you are gentle when you are detangling, and you're getting the tangles out of your curls thoroughly.
Next, you want to make sure that you're drying your hair correctly. One thing about growing natural hair is that you don't want to have your hair breaking off at the same time it's growing. Another thing that can cause breakage is using a regular cotton bath towel when you wash your hair. Ensure that you are using a microfiber towel so that your hair is being hugged, not ripped when you're drying your hair.
And the last part of a great wash day is making sure you're keeping your hair moisturized between washes. I like to put some water in my favorite oils inside a continuous spray bottle. So that wraps up my first tip of just having a perfect wash day when you are trying to grow long and healthy hair.
But my second tip is another method that helps prevent breakage, which is low manipulation or protective styles. So that could be as simple as a bun, braids, or twists. Make sure that you are participating in these little manipulation styles to give your hair time to grow. The kinkier your texture is, the less it likes to be touched and bothered. Not detangling or style your hair every day can help you with your growth journey.
My third tip for growing long and healthy natural hair is to befriend scissors. Do not hold on to any of your damage on your ends. Whether that is split and heat damage, permed or straight ends, they have to go. Split ends aren't going to repair themselves magically. There are different products to help you prolonged your ends' health, but nothing can 100% repair them. So get into a habit of getting regular trims, whether you're doing them yourself, I have videos on how I trim my natural hair at home, or going to a salon and getting your hair trimmed. If you are transitioning, I recommend just cutting all the damage off because it's just going to make your hair journey that much more enjoyable.
So my fourth tip for growing long and healthy natural hair is to avoid heat. If you want to grow out your hair, you're going to have to ditch the heat. I've seen it happen to so many people so many times. Heat is going to damage your hair over time or right away. So I recommend avoiding blow dryers and straighteners if your goal is to grow out your hair. You might have seen me on my channel using a blow dryer to achieve a different style. And that's because not everyone can live under the strict rules 24/7. At that time, I wanted to do something different with my hair, which is OK. But if my hair got damaged from using that, it's all on me because I decided to experiment with heat tools. But I haven't had my hair straightened since 2013.
So tip number five is to find your holy grail products. Use other products that you love to use on a daily or weekly basis. They are keeping your hair soft and moisturized throughout the week. When I grew up my hair the first time, my holy grail products were the As I Am leaving conditioner, raw shea butter, water, and oil blends. I would also do a DIY avocado deep conditioner. I will have links below to the products I have used throughout my hair journey. Once again, this has been a seven-year process, and it's still ongoing. Just get your main ones that your hair loves, and use those consistently.
